A ground-up rebuild of Mojaloop vNext, the open-source payment switch built for interoperable, high-volume transactions across banks, wallets, payment providers, and financial institutions.

ARG joined the core Mojaloop vNext team to help rebuild the open-source payment switch from the ground up. The previous implementation was no longer fit for the intended transaction flow, scale, and bank adoption path, so the work focused on redesigning the architecture around microservices, zero-trust service boundaries, controlled core dependencies, and compatibility with multiple ISO/payment-message standards. This effort was carried out in collaboration with Cyberbones, whose team led the overall system architecture and helped shape the platform's technical direction.

What had to be solved

Mojaloop vNext needed to move beyond an implementation that was blocking the intended payment flow and limiting the path toward reliable bank adoption.

The goal was not to patch the old system, but to rebuild the open-source switch around clearer service boundaries, controlled core logic, and transaction flows that could support mass usage.

The platform also needed to interoperate with different financial institutions and payment-message standards, including ISO-based requirements, so banks and payment providers could integrate it without forcing every participant into the same internal model.

How we made it work

  • Helped redesign Mojaloop vNext as a ground-up rebuild of the open-source payment switch
  • Reworked the platform around a microservice architecture with zero trust between services
  • Rebuilt core payment services with a controlled dependency surface so critical logic stayed understandable, maintainable, and owned by the project
  • Designed transaction flows for high-volume payment processing across banks, wallets, and payment providers
  • Supported compatibility with multiple ISO/payment-message standards to make bank adoption and integration more practical
  • Strengthened participant isolation, transaction orchestration, settlement flows, and operational reliability
  • Supported testing, QA, and migration work so the new version could move from architectural redesign toward production-grade adoption

Results

Helped move Mojaloop vNext toward a more controllable, secure, scalable, and bank-ready payment-switch foundation. Load testing verified platform capability above 2,000 transactions per second, alongside integration across different financial institutions and payment-message standards.
